6th Grade Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble of primarily treble voices under the direction of Mr. Markley. The class is sometimes divided into two sections though currently meets during 6th period only. They meet in the High School Choir Room. The 6th grade choir will begin singing 2 and 3 part literature in both English and foreign language, learn the basics of solfege and rhythmic sight-reading, and perform at four concerts during the school year and is invited to participate in ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest and Circle the State with Song.
7/8th Grade Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble of treble and baritone voices under the direction of Mr. Markley. The choir is typically divided into two separate periods, with about half of the students in 4th or 5th period. They meet in the High School Choir Room. The 7/8th grade choir will sing primarily three-part literature and perform at four concerts during the school year and participate in ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest. They are additionally invited to participate in IMEA’s Circle the State with Song as well as Music in the Parks when we participate. 8th grade choir students and sometimes 7th grade choir students are invited to audition for HTC's Spring Musical.
The MocaBellas are an auditioned after school ensemble of treble voices. Like the ReMarkables, this ensemble is kept small. This group performs at school events and programs including concerts, home HMS sporting events, Faculty Meetings, ISSMA and more. They are not currently performing.
CSWS: Circle the State With Song is a statewide choral festival for elementary and middle school choirs. Nearly 5,000 youth from hundreds of different schools audition to participate in Circle the State each spring at one of 12 sites throughout Indiana. CSWS provides our students the opportunity to perform with students from other Area 1 schools a set of quality and challenging choral children’s repertoire. There are over 15,000 community members who attend these festival performances annually.
Beginning Mixed Chorus is non-auditioned and is a mixed group of treble and bass voices when it offered (not during the 25-26 school year). The course is comprised of all levels of students (beginning, intermediate and advanced) as well as all grade levels. All choirs are credited classes and follow the Indiana Academic Standards on Music. Each choir student receives credit toward elective work for their diplomas or fine arts credit toward Core 40 or Academic Honors Diplomas. Beginning Mixed Chorus sings primarily SAB literature in English and foreign languages and learns to read music using sol-fege. This course can be used as part of the graduation pathway now required for graduation. They perform at four concerts per year and participate in ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest.
Advanced Girls Choir is an auditioned ensemble of treble voices. It typically meets during one class period but on occasion is divided into two sections. The course is comprised of all levels of students (beginning, intermediate and advanced) as well as all grade levels. All choirs are credited classes and follow the Indiana Academic Standards on Music. Each choir student receives credit toward elective work for their diplomas or fine arts credit toward Core 40 or Academic Honors Diplomas. Advanced Girls Choir sings primarily SSA literature in English and foreign languages and learns to read music using sol-fege. This course can be used as part of the graduation pathway now required for graduation. They perform at four concerts per year and participate in ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest. Every other year they also are invited to travel to Walt Disney World to participate in Disney's Performing Arts Programs.
Varsity Choir is an auditioned ensemble of mixed voices of our top students. It typically meets during one class period but on occasion is divided into two sections. The course is comprised of all levels of students (beginning, intermediate and advanced) as well as all grade levels. All choirs are credited classes and follow the Indiana Academic Standards on Music. Each choir student receives credit toward elective work for their diplomas or fine arts credit toward Core 40 or Academic Honors Diplomas. Varsity Choir sings primarily SATB literature in English and foreign languages and learns to read music using sol-fege. This course can be used as part of the graduation pathway now required for graduation. They perform at four concerts per year and participate in ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest. Every other year they also are invited to travel to Walt Disney World to participate in Disney's Performing Arts Programs. In recent years they have also perform at the Northwest Indiana Choral Festival, Service of Lessons and Carols (picture above), as well as other community events.
The Madrigal Choir is an auditioned after school ensemble of treble and bass voices that meets every other year. They perform at the bi-annual Madrigal Feaste. They dress in period costumes and sing primarily classical holiday music.
The ReMarkables is an auditioned after school ensemble of treble voices. The ensemble is kept small. This group performs at community events and school programs and events including the Madrigal Feaste, Veteran's Day programs, church functions, the Pancake Breakfast and ISSMA.
The Disney Choir is comprised of students in Advanced Girls Choir and Varsity Choir who elect to participate in Disney Performing Arts programs over Spring Break. We travel every other year. The Disney Choir rehearses after school twice a week during the first part of the second semester.
